Bone grafting is a type of oral surgery. It is typically recommended when your jawbone is not dense enough or thick enough to support your teeth or a dental implant. After you loose a tooth, the supporting bone in that area begins to shrink, or resorb, causing your other teeth to become unstable in your mouth and to shift out of their places. This is due to the fact that your tooth roots stimulate the jawbone to keep them healthy and capable of supporting the teeth. The thickness and density of your jawbone must be restored in order to keep your teeth stable and functioning properly. Bone grafting is often recommended prior to receiving a dental implant or if you have lost bone tissue due to periodontal disease.
When you receive a bone graft, our dentist will transplant a piece of bone from another area of your jaw or body to your jawbone. The best results are achieved using bone from your own body, but artificial bone material or bone fragments from a tissue bank are available if needed. The transplanted bone then grows together with your original bone structure to create a stronger and more stable foundation.
