Periodontics is a field of dental specialty, focusing on preventing, diagnosing and treating gum disease and similar conditions. Periodontics is also involved in the placement of dental implants, including treatments such as bone grafting that may precede implant placement.
Gum disease, or periodontal disease, is an infectious degenerative condition. It is caused when harmful bacteria trapped in plaque infect the gum tissues, causing irritation and inflammation. Common signs of periodontal disease include:
- Redness, swelling and tenderness in the gums
- Gums which bleed easily
- Gum recession
- Loose teeth
- Painful chewing
- Persistent bad breath
- Pus between the teeth
- Changes in the fit of oral appliances
If diagnosed and treated in the earliest stages of development (a condition known as gingivitis), gum disease can be halted and the effects reversed. If allowed to progress to a more serious stage (known as periodontitis), gum disease becomes incurable and can only be managed through ongoing treatment. Untreated gum disease can lead to tooth loss, bone loss and gum recession.
